Southwest Flies Red
Southwest Airlines will begin taking part in the “Red Friday” campaign. The airline is encouraging its employees to wear red on Fridays to show support for the troops.
We at the LUV airline are a patriotic bunch. We LUV our country; we give America the Freedom to fly; and we support our troops who fight for our country’s many freedoms.
One way we express our LUV is by encouraging our Employees to wear red shirts on Fridays to show our support for the troops. In addition, our Internal Customer Care Team (this year’s Heroes of the Heart!) sends LUV packages to all of our Employees or immediate family members who are called for military service. Many times, individual departments also keep in touch with Employees who have been called for military duty.
The effort is organized by the Bluegrass Military Affairs Coalition, which
is a growing community based nonprofit organization with headquarters in Lexington, Kentucky. It is a non-sectarian, non-partisan civilian organization of patriotic individuals, veterans, business, government and veterans organizations, and all branches of the United States armed forces.
The purpose of Red Friday is explained here:
You can show your support of the troops by example:
wear some thing RED every Friday.Americans who support the troops used to be called the “silent majority”. They are no longer silent. They are individually demonstrating support for the troops. They are not organized, boisterous or over-bearing. They get little, if any, news media coverage on TV or in newspapers to reflect their message or opinions.
Many Americans simply want a way to show that the vast majority of Americans support their troops. The idea of civilians showing solidarity and support for the troops with dignity and respect will happen every Friday and continue each and every Friday until the troops come home, sending a quiet but deafening message.
By word of mouth and example every Friday — Americans can make the United States a SEA OF RED, much like fans support their team at a homecoming football game.
Not a bad idea, but I wonder why Southwest is the only national participant right now. Maybe it’s the word-of-mouth marketing strategy. The airline isn’t listed on BMAC member list.

Thanks for the link to Shelley’s post about wearing red on Friday at Southwest Airlines. Many of our own Employees are on active duty in uniform, and it just seemed the right thing for our Company to do.
