Chisum to Strip Protections from Bible Bill

UPDATE: I couldn’t upload the .pdf of the HB 1287 Floor Substitute, so I sent it over to Vince and he’s posted it in his post on the bill.

Rep. Chisum, the author of HB 1287, the bill which will require schools statewide to offer elective courses on the Old and New Testaments, is likely to offer a floor substitute to the bill when it hits the floor today stripping out religious liberty protections and scholastic standards.

He’d previously, during committee hearings (the first of which, if you remember, was on Passover), agreed with the Texas Freedom Network to add the protections, require teacher training in religion and First Amendment rights and give TEA the authority to set standards and choose textbooks. Now he’s reneging. Surprise, surprise. Such a good Christian.

[…] Damn House TV THE BIBLE BILL IS UP AND THERE’S NO SOUND ON THE TV FEED! ARRRRGH! UPDATE: Okay. False alarm. It’s just my TV feed — in both rooms of my house with cable hook-ups. Maybe just Grande Communications? You can watch the live feed online (with sound!). Almost made me miss Chisum immediately laying out the floor substitute as Amendment 1 stripping protections from the bill. […]
