Petraeus Goes to Central Command

I think this is great.
Army Gen. David Petraeus, the four-star general who led troops in Iraq for the past year, will be nominated by President Bush to be the next commander of U.S. Central Command, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Wednesday.
Gates said he expected Petraeus to make the shift in late summer or early fall. […]

Foreign Service Officers, Like It or Not, You’re Going, Part II

Here we go again.
The State Department is warning U.S. diplomats they may be forced to serve in Iraq next year and says it will soon start identifying prime candidates for jobs at the Baghdad embassy and outlying provinces, according to a cable obtained Tuesday by The Associated Press.
A similar call-up notice last year caused an […]

Can’t Argue With That

I have to pass this along from The Torch:
“They look at us like dimwits,” he said. “I don’t want to be looked at like that. … I’ve once had a woman tell me, ‘If there weren’t people like you, there wouldn’t be any wars.’ That’s angering.” - Private Francis Archambault
It may be angering, but it’s […]

Our New Problem From Hell

Samantha Power, of “A Problem from Hell:” America and the Age of Genocide fame, an insightful book studying America’s indifference to various genocides throughout the 20th Century, had a great book review in last Sunday’s The New York Times.
While I started reading her review just because I respected her and wanted to read her thoughts […]

More Contractors Than Troops in Iraq

The Los Angeles Times:
The number of U.S.-paid private contractors in Iraq now exceeds that of American combat troops, newly released figures show, raising fresh questions about the privatization of the war effort and the government’s capacity to carry out military and rebuilding campaigns.
More than 180,000 civilians — including Americans, foreigners and Iraqis — are working […]

Troop Interviews Display COIN Successes

Here are a couple of interesting video interviews of troops on the ground in Iraq taking part in current operations southwest of Baghdad.
Note how young the captain appears.
Soldiers talk to a military reporter about securing a main supply route for coalition forces and Iraqi nationals, Operation Crazyhorse Thunder, and working with Iraqi local nationals.

SSG Todd […]
