When my father, and later I, was stationed at Keesler Air Force Base, C-130s sang me to sleep at night from the runway across from our house (and, later, my dorm).

A new report says it’s “The Best Military Aircraft Ever.” (Warning: PDF)

Which is probably true: It’s a highly versatile aircraft — performing duties as a cargo plane, a weather reconnaissance plane (these are the “Hurricane Hunters” that fly into hurricanes), gunships and others.

The sounds of these guys (and what I thought were KC-135 medevacs but may have actually been C-9s) on the runway across the street and golf course from my house on Keesler Air Force Base, Miss. sang me to sleep at night:

The Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunters are currently deployed to St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands where they are flying state-of-the-art WC-130J aircraft into Hurricane Dean in support of the National Hurricane Center.

Army Goes Hybrid

The diesel-electric hybrid hype has met its match: the U.S. Army. After focusing on hydrogen fuel cells in its original version of “The Aggressor,” a high-performance, off-road Alternative Mobility Vehicle (AMV) for military ground exploration and scouting missions, the Pentagon is now going the way of Detroit—with batteries.

The new, second-generation prototype will still utilize the same basic chassis and exterior design for light-duty capacity. But the Army’s auto research arm—part of the Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC)—has developed a battery-dominant, hybrid-electric drivetrain with a diesel engine-generator. That could make the new Aggressor the first hybrid to hit the streets of Baghdad en masse.
